Are pet expenses tax deductible?
We have a lot of clients in Finanche who are animal lovers like we are and we get asked this question a lot.
Unfortunately, the answer is no, in the UK, expenses related to pets are generally not tax deductible. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) consider pets to be a personal expense, rather than a business or work-related expense, and therefore not eligible for tax relief. So if you need someone to look after your pet whilst you are away on business, you will not be able to claim the expense.
There are some exceptions, however. If you own a working animal, such as a farm dog or a guide dog, you may be able to claim expenses related to their care as a business expense. Additionally, if you run a business that involves animals, such as a pet grooming service or a kennel, you may be able to claim some of the costs associated with caring for the animals as a business expense.
It’s always a good idea to check with us at Finanche to see if any of your pet-related expenses may be eligible for tax relief.
