Frequently Asked Questions

Your tax questions, answered: helping you stay informed and stress-free

  • When do I need to submit my tax return?

If you’re self-employed or a director of a limited company, you must submit a Self Assessment tax return each year. The deadline for filing online returns is 31 January following the end of the tax year (which runs from 6 April to 5 April). For example, the 2024/25 return is due by 31 January 2026. Paper returns are due earlier—by 31 October.

  • What information do I need to complete my tax return?

You’ll need to gather:

  • Details of all income (e.g., sales, wages, dividends)
  • Records of business expenses
  • P60/P45/P11D if you had employment income
  • Bank interest or other investment income
  • Any benefits or grants (e.g., SEISS, government support)
  • Student loan or pension contributions if applicable

Accurate and complete information helps avoid errors, penalties, or overpaying tax. Tip. Did you know? Higher earners in the UK miss out on hundreds of millions in unclaimed pension tax relief every year. HMRC are quick to tell you if you miss something but if you are missing out on claiming a relief they won’t tell you. If you are a higher rate tax payer and have been making employee pension contributions outside of salary sacrifice arrangements, you could be due some tax back. Contact us or seek professional advice on how to do this.

  • What expenses can I claim on my tax return?

Allowable business expenses reduce your taxable profit. These can include:

  • Office costs (e.g., phone, internet, stationery)
  • Travel and mileage
  • Premises costs (rent, utilities)
  • Staff wages and subcontractors
  • Professional fees (accountants, legal)
  • Marketing and advertising

Expenses must be wholly and exclusively for business purposes. Keeping receipts and detailed records is essential. Tip. On average only about 800,000 taxpayers make a claim each year for allowable expenses from HMRC. Considering the total taxpayer population in UK as of 2022 as per the government statistics was 32,200,000, this represents only 2.5% of claims. Why not arrange a call with one of our experts and see if you are due some money back?

  • What happens if I miss the tax return deadline?

If you miss the 31 January deadline, you’ll receive an automatic £100 penalty. Further penalties apply if your return is more than:

  • 3 months late: daily penalties (up to 90 days)
  • 6 or 12 months late: additional charges based on the tax due

Interest is also charged on any late tax payments. If you’re unable to file or pay on time, contact HMRC as soon as possible to arrange a payment plan. Tip. HMRC will charge you interest on the payment plan. Considering completing the tax returns early – by May/June. This will give you eight months to pay the tax and you can spear the payments without a payment plan and interest free.

  • Do I need to file a return if I made a loss or earned very little?

Yes, if HMRC has issued a notice to file, you must complete a tax return—even if you made no profit or had minimal income. If you’ve stopped trading or believe you no longer need to file, you must notify HMRC and formally request that the return be withdrawn.

Filing a return with a declared loss can still be beneficial, as the loss may be carried forward to offset against future profits. Tip. Check your gateway account or call HMRC to confirm that a return is not required. Don’t assume that they know. We have successfully challenged many late filing penalties for taxpayers that were not aware that they needed to tell HMRC that they are no longer trading.
