In our opinion here are the steps in picking your next accounting/tax adviser:

Firstly, you need to determine your needs. Identify the services that you require such as tax preparation and the type of business advice you will require.

Secondly, search for potential advisers. We advise looking for accountants registered with professional bodies such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). These organisations have strict membership requirements and ongoing training and development requirements to ensure their members are up to date with recommendations. Also, as part of membership, the accountants need to have insurance in place which will protect them in case something ever goes wrong.

Thirdly, ask for recommendations. Talk to your friends and relatives, especially ones with their own businesses to see if they can recommend someone.

Fourthly, arrange a call or meeting. People buy people, so always talk or meet the accountant. You can get a sense of their expertise, communication style and overall fit for your criteria.

Lastly, check references. You can ask the accountant for references from clients they have worked in the past, especially ones that are from your industry. Another easier way is to google the company and check the reviews.
